Auto Rickshaw
Best for short hops inside the old city. Mahakal Temple to Ram Ghat costs ₹40-60; railway station to temple ₹80-100. Autos don't run on meters here — agree the fare before sitting. Shared autos on fixed routes cost ₹10-20 per seat.
E-Rickshaw
Cleaner and cheaper than autos for the temple zone. The Mahakal Lok corridor area is served by e-rickshaw stands at Karkaraja parking and Nandi Dwar — ₹20-30 for most drops within 2 km. They also cover Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat and Chintaman Ganesh routes.
City Bus & Tempo
Ujjain City Transport buses connect Nanakheda Bus Stand, railway station, Dewas Gate and the Mahakal area (₹10-25). Tempos ply fixed routes to Mangalnath, Kal Bhairav and Gadkalika — cheapest option at ₹15-25 but crowded on Mondays and festival days.
Intercity Connections
Nanakheda Bus Stand runs AC and non-AC buses to Indore (every 15 minutes, ₹80-150), Bhopal, Dewas and Omkareshwar. Ujjain Junction connects directly to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. Nearest airport: Indore (DAB), 58 km — 1.5 hours by pre-booked taxi.
Which Should You Choose?
For a darshan day with elderly family members or luggage, a private cab for 4-6 hours (₹1,200-1,800) beats juggling autos. Solo travellers on a budget can combine e-rickshaws in the temple zone with shared tempos for outer temples like Mangalnath and Sandipani Ashram.
Walking the Temple Zone
The core pilgrimage area is compact. Mahakaleshwar, the Mahakal Lok corridor, Harsiddhi Temple and Ram Ghat are all within easy walking distance of each other. Many pilgrims park once, then do this cluster on foot. It is often quicker than driving, because the lanes around the temple are narrow and vehicle entry is regulated at peak times. Budget extra time if you are travelling with elderly family members.
Getting Between the Outer Temples
The second ring of sights is spread across the city and along the Kshipra. It includes Gadkalika, Bhartrihari Caves, Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Sandipani Ashram and Chintaman Ganesh. These are too far apart to walk comfortably. Most visitors cover them in one half-day loop by cab or auto. Gadkalika, Bhartrihari Caves and Kal Bhairav sit close together in the north-west, and Mangalnath and Sandipani Ashram are nearby too. Arriving by Train
Ujjain Junction is the main station and the one most long-distance trains use. It is on the edge of the old city, a short auto or e-rickshaw ride from the Mahakal temple area. Prepaid and app-based autos wait outside the main exit. If you have luggage and a hotel near the corridor, confirm with your driver how close they can get, because some lanes near the temple are closed to vehicles. Travelling on Festival and Peak Days
On Mahashivratri, Shravan Mondays, Nag Panchami and during Sawari processions, the police set up diversions and no-vehicle zones around the temple. Autos and cabs drop passengers at designated points, and the last stretch is on foot. Allow at least an hour of buffer for any connection you cannot miss, such as a train or a flight out of Indore. Tips for Getting Around Smoothly
- Agree the fare, and whether it covers waiting time, before you start. This applies especially to autos doing a multi-temple loop.
- Keep small change. E-rickshaw and tempo drivers often cannot break large notes.

- Summer afternoons (April to June) are very hot. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and evening, and use an AC vehicle in between.
- Save your hotel's location pin. Many old-city addresses are hard for drivers to find by name alone.
